A gym is a shared space where people come to work on their fitness goals. However, nothing disrupts a good workout more than bad etiquette. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned gym-goer, understanding what not to do is just as important as knowing what to do. Ignoring basic gym manners can not only disturb others but also create an unpleasant environment.
Here are some of the most common gym mistakes you should avoid to ensure a respectful and efficient workout session.
1. Leaving Equipment Sweaty
Sweating during a workout is completely normal, but leaving a machine covered in sweat is not. Most gym equipment has leather or plastic surfaces, which don’t absorb sweat. Always carry a workout towel and wipe down machines after use. Not only is this hygienic, but it also shows respect for others who will use the equipment next.
2. Hogging Equipment Without Using It
If you’re sitting on a machine while scrolling through your phone, texting, or taking selfies, you’re wasting valuable gym space. Many people are waiting for their turn, and it’s unfair to occupy equipment without actually using it. If you need to rest between sets, step aside and allow others to work in.
3. Playing Loud Music or Taking Phone Calls
One of the most frustrating things in a gym is someone blasting music so loud that even others with headphones can hear it. Equally annoying are loud personal phone calls in the middle of the gym floor. Keep your music to yourself and take calls outside if necessary. A gym is for working out, not a social gathering.
4. Not Sharing Equipment
Just like we were taught to share in childhood, the same rule applies in the gym. If you’re spending too much time on one machine while others are waiting, it’s inconsiderate. Rotate between different exercises or allow someone else to use the equipment in between your sets.
5. Leaving Weights Everywhere
Leaving dumbbells or plates scattered on the gym floor is not only messy but also dangerous. Someone could trip, get injured, or waste time searching for the right weights. Always put equipment back where it belongs after use to keep the gym safe and organised.
6. Pressuring Others to Hurry Up
Standing with arms crossed, impatiently waiting for someone to finish their set, or giving them a hurry-up look is just bad etiquette. Everyone has their own pace, and rushing them can make them uncomfortable. Instead, ask politely if they’re almost done or simply wait your turn.
7. Arriving Late to a Class or Session
If you’ve signed up for a group class or personal training session, showing up late can be disruptive. It distracts the instructor and interrupts other participants. If you’re running late, enter quietly and avoid drawing attention. Better yet, aim to arrive early to settle in and get the most out of the session.
8. Treating the Locker Room as a Private Bathroom The locker room is a shared space, not your personal bathroom. Walking around naked, shaving in the showers, or leaving hair and foam everywhere can make others uncomfortable. Always be mindful of others’ privacy, clean up after yourself, and respect common courtesy.
